The 2016 AAALAC Veterinary Scholarship has been awarded. This year’s recipient is Dr. Marianna Abreu. Dr. Abreu is employed at the Federal University in Rio de Janeiro, one of the largest laboratory animal programs in Brazil. Her responsibilities include teaching classes in laboratory animal science to undergraduates and graduate students, as well as program management and training for 55 animal caregivers. She hopes to share the additional knowledge gained from her studies of laboratory animal science not only at her workplace, but also at other institutions in Brazil, and through the Brazilian Society for Laboratory Animal Science. Dr. Abreu will receive support of up to €6000 toward completing a Master’s program at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain.
The financial support is given by AAALAC, in honor of the late Dr. Harry Rozmiarek, who was ICLAS Secretary General at the time of his death in June of 2013. Dr. Rozmiarek was a veterinarian involved in education in laboratory animal science and medicine. To continue the work that meant so much to him, the AAALAC Harry Rozmiarek Memorial Award allows access to training for veterinarians from parts of the globe in which training in laboratory animal science and medicine is unavailable or difficult to obtain.
ICLAS offers two such scholarship opportunities each year. There were 7 qualified and deserving applicants this January, from every part of the globe, and the selection committee regrets that we have financing for only two awards each year. The next scholarship will be offered in June, 2016.
